Kunstenaarsboeken (2): Citaten en definities
Wat onderscheidt een kunstenaarsboek van een catalogus of een literair werk? Of andersom, wat is de definitie ervan? Is zo’n definitie opstellen onmogelijk, zoals Simon Ford schreef in Facing the Page. British Artists’ Books (Londen, estamp, 1993)? Ford liet vervolgens vijfentwintig citaten van kunstenaars, academici en bibliofielen voor zichzelf spreken. Sinds kunstenaars met werk in boekvorm de traditionele ruimte van de galerij of het museum verlaten, opengebroken, verruimd of toegankelijker gemaakt hebben, groeide niet alleen het aantal kunstenaarsboeken, maar ook de hoeveelheid opvattingen over het genre. Bij wijze van aanvulling op de lijst van Ford, illustreren deze vijfentwintig andere citaten (in alfabetische volgorde) de aanhoudende polyfonie aan stemmen en meningen over het kunstenaarsboek.

‘Artists’ books’, I don’t like the term. I prefer to call them simply ‘books’: one neither talks about writers’ books! […] A book is a volume like any other and therefore a possible support for my work. It is important to make it financially affordable. There is no reason to make it more expensive than any other book. To me, it is a work in itself, just like the other works.

There are no specific criteria for defining what an artist’s book is, but there are many criteria for defining what it is not, or what it partakes of, or what it distinguishes itself from.

Generell läßst sich aber sagen, daß Künstlerbücher das Ergebnis dessen sind, was Künstler mit Büchern, über, um, für oder gegen sie machen. Diese leicht tautologische Definition vermag es noch am konsequentesten, jene Offenheit anzuerkennen, die Künstlerbücher kennzeichnet und die für die Kunstwissenschaftler, Bibliothekare und Ausstellungsmacher häufig so verwirrend ist.

[An artist’s book is] a book done for its own sake and not for the information it contains. That is: it doesn’t contain a lot of works, like a book of poems. It is a work. Its design and format reflect its content – they intermerge, interpenetrate. It might be any art: an artist’s book could be music, photography, graphics, intermedial literature. The experience of reading it, viewing it, framing it – that is what the artist stresses in making it.

Jeder weiß, daß ein Buch aus aneinandergereihten Seiten besteht und einen Umschlag hat. Mit diesen einfachen Definitionen haben die Künstler das, was ein Buch ist, unglaublich erweitert. Artists’ books are, like any other medium, a means of conveying art ideas from the artist to the viewer/reader. Unlike most other media they are available to all at a low cost. They do not need a special place to be seen. They are not valuable except for the ideas they contain. They contain the material in a sequence which is determined by the artist. (The reader/viewer can read the material in any order but the artist presents it as s/he thinks it should be).

Het boek kan alleen aanspraak maken op de status van kunstwerk indien het iets anders is dan een catalogus of een bundel ready-made documenten. Ook al ligt deze voorwaarde nog zo voor de hand, er wordt toch lang niet altijd aan voldaan en in de praktijk is het onderscheid soms moeilijk te maken.

Books have certain attributes that appeal to artists seeking to communicate more widely. They can be mass-produced and yet each reader can experience the artist’s work in its primary state, in the original, owing to the fact that it was conceived as a book.

I know, that my books are not thought of in the same way as my paintings. Ein Buch wird neu geschaffen oder kann verändert, verfremdet, teilweise sogar zerstört werden zum Anlass einer künstlerischen Aussage. Solange das neu entstandene Kunstwerk im herkömmlichen Sinne ‘lesbar’ ist, kann es vom Betrachter als ‘Künstlerbuch’ verstanden werden.

Ich habe eigentlich keine Vorstellung davon, was ein Künstlerbuch sein soll. Denn eigentlich ist es ganz einfach: Ein Buch ist ein Buch. Künstler sind Menschen und Menschen machen Bücher.

KünstlerInnenbücher sind eine schöne Sache. Sie geben Einblick in die Denkweisen von KünstlerInnen, stellen gebräuchliche Gestaltungsregeln auf den Kopf und stören unsere Lesegewohnheiten. Meistens sind es Objekte, welche die üblichen Formen übertreiben. Sie sind entweder sehr groß oder sehr klein, sehr dick oder sehr dünn, aber auch parfümiertes Mittelmass. Oft sind sie eine Herausforderung für die BenutzerInnen, denn sie sind manchmal sehr schwer, oder passen nicht ins Regal und Schrift und/oder Gestaltung sind dabei derart unkonventionell, dass man sie gelegentlich schlechthin als unleserlich bezeichnen muss. Auch dem/der KünstlerIn selbst bereiten sie Probleme, weil man sie nicht ohne immensen Aufwand herstellen, vermitteln oder weitergeben kann. Jedenfalls sind KünstlerInnenbücher häufig der Beweis dafür, dass Schönheit auch ein Ärgernis bedeuten kann.
